Paprika, Mustard Chicken Goujons

Nigel Slater - Paprika, Mustard Chicken Goujons  Recipe Book: Nigel Slater - Eat  Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ So, So good! When I started mixing the paprika and mustard together I started deliberating whether these were going to be any good as the mix smelled funny. I actually went and opened a new jar of mustard to check the smell. It was fine, my nose is obviously weird. These are very quick easy to make, I used 2 chicken breasts and sliced each one into 3.  I suppose they’re not overly healthy with being fried but I suppose you could try baking them....nah stick to frying! 😆  I served with the wedges of lime and also a bit of Hellman’s Roasted Garlic Mayonnaise.  Absolutely delicious! Aga conversion: I used a regular frying pan on the boiling plate for this recipe as they really don’t take long to fry. Will I make this again? Absolutely! The husband loved them too.

Nigel Slater - Poor Man’s Potatoes

Poor Man’s Potatoes Recipe Book: Nigel Slater - Eat Review: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I have to say I really enjoyed this dish. It’s quite a nice comfort food style vegetarian dish. I have made this before and the first time I made it I decided to add in a chilli 🌶 at the start.... a whole sliced chilli 🌶... maybe you might want to put a half one in instead! 😆  nevertheless it was still good.  This time I sort of stuck to the original recipe. Only alterations were that I didn’t have the normal size bell peppers so I used a few of those smaller sweet peppers to get the same amount. Aga conversion: I kind of struggled with this conversion, I sort of toggled between both hot plates and then when it was time to cover and simmer enthusiastically, I popped the covered Aga sauté pan on the floor of the roasting oven. After 20 mins there was still loads of stock left so I gave it a bit longer uncovered on the hot plates toggling between them for roughly 10 minutes after squashing about

Nigel Slater - Chicken Wings, Katsu Sauce

Chicken Wings, Katsu Sauce Recipe Book: Nigel Slater - Eat Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Very nice. For us it didn’t quite hit the spot for a 5⭐️ but it was still good. We had loads of sauce left so next time I’d make half the portion of sauce. It tasted a bit like satay your me even though there was no peanut butter in it. I had to substitute medium curry powder for mild as I didn’t have any mild in, but it tasted good regardless. Easy enough to make, basically chuck all the sauce ingredients in the blender. Aga conversion: I did most of it on the hot plates, I used the boiling plate for the first 5 minutes and then simmered for 30 minutes on the floor of the simmering oven. I did the final crisping you fry on the boiling plate.  Will I make this again? Yes it was good, probably just use chicken breast next time as it was a bit messy to eat though.

Nigel Slater - Chorizo Potatoes

Chorizo Potatoes  Recipe Book: Nigel Slater - Eat Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I do love Nigel Slater recipes and I think all of this weeks reviews are from this book. There are very few recipes that have disappointed from this guy, he really does know his stuff. So tonight’s recipe was easy to make but I did have a couple of quirks with it.... Firstly, I forgot to write down exactly how much chorizo I needed so bought a pack of diced cooking chorizo from Sainsbury’s. When I got home I realised I only had 150g 😱 instead of 250g.  Fortunately this turned out for the better because my potatoes were slightly smaller and 150g really was enough for them. I also decided to use a 50/50 mix of cheddar and mozzarella as I cannot for the life in me seem to be able to get hold of Manchego cheese so google said to use mozzarella or cheddar....so I used both! Cooking wise, the potatoes took longer than 45 minutes to be cooked right through they took 1hr 15, so basically cook y

Nigel Slater - Citrus Chilli Grilled Chicken

Citrus Chilli Grilled Chicken Recipe Book: Nigel Slater - Eat Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was so good! Such a simple idea but so tasty. It’s supposed to be easy to bone a chicken leg.... not for me... I ended up using the scissors to do it, but I got it off in the end. Next time I’ll get the butcher to do it! So, apart from the faffing about deboning the leg it was very quick and easy to make. I just served mine with a salad. Aga conversion: I used a small baking tray on the top set of runners in the roasting oven. Took about 10-11 minutes as my Aga was running slightly cooler. Will I make this again? Yes I will

Nigel Slater - Spaghetti Bake

Spaghetti Bake Recipe Book: Nigel Slater - Eat Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ OMG 😮 this was so simple yet so tasty 😋. Absolute winner! This recipe is not in any way healthy with having double cream and bacon in it, but it’s a great winter warmer. Quick to prepare and then 30 minutes in the oven....can’t grumble at that.  I made a half portion and put it in my 1.2L (I halved the recipe to serve 2) capacity oven dish.  I have to admit, it didn’t look overly appetising when I put it in the oven dish, it looked quite bland and boring and I was actually hesitant to try it.... what a nice surprise though, the garlic and bacon really did do something special. Note: when Nigel’s recipe says serves 4 I get 6 out of it. So this recipe when halved I thought there was enough to serve 3 but it was so good I ate my very large portion! Aga conversion: I put mine on the grid shelf on the floor of the baking oven for 30 minutes and it was perfect. Will I make this again? Defin

Nigel Slater - Chocolate, Dulce de Leche, Cantucci

Chocolate, Dulce De Leche, Cantucci Recipe Book: Nigel Slater's Greenfeast (Autumn/Winter) The latest one! Review: 5 stars for this one! Finally something that actually did turn out for me this week. It's very rich, it's a chocolately heaven and both my son and I couldn't eat it all in one sitting. Oh, but how happy did eating this pudding make me? VERY happy I can say with all honesty. Didn't help my healthy eating, but never mind It's easy enough to make, I used my Kenwood Chef Major to do the whisking and all in all only took about 30 minutes to make. Aga conversion: Pop the chocolate in a bowl and place it on the top of the Aga to melt while you prep and weigh everything else, when you've got it in the ramekins pop it on the grid shelf on the floor of the baking oven for 20 minutes. Perfection in a pot. Will I make this again? Absolutely. Buy the book here  Buy the Kindle Version

Nigel Slater - New Potatoes, Garlic, Peppers

New Potatoes, Garlic, Peppers. Recipe Book: Nigel Slater's Greenfeast (Spring/Summer)  Review: 4 stars for this one! It was really tasty but didn't blow us away. Finally managed to get hold of some Romano Peppers for this one - Aldi to the rescue! I think I should've just stopped cooking last week, it seemed like I had a mare with most of the recipes I attempted. So this is how this one went... 700g new potatoes sliced thinly - I used my mandolin on its thickest setting, prepped everything and started cooking... Using my nice new shallow cast iron casserole pan I started on the peppers - nicely done - now on to the potatoes 'cooking them in one layer if possible' Bloody hell! How am I supposed to do that I've got blinking millions of them because you said to slice them thinly Nigel!!! So my nice thin new potatoes did not go nice and brown and then just get turned over, they got cooked and cooked and cooked in the hopes of them eventually going

Nigel Slater - Orzo, Peppers

Orzo, Peppers. Recipe Book: Nigel Slater's Greenfeast (Spring/Summer)  Review: 4 stars for this one! It was really good. A bit different from your usual shapes of pasta. I can only describe Orzo as a very smooth pasta shaped like rice, it's bizarre, you sort of look at it thinking its going to be like rice, but its not. This recipe produced way too big of a portion, of which I had already realised that it would just based on me tapping the ingredients into MyFitnessPal for some calorie counts. cooked and eaten as a serves 2 it comes in at around 966 calories, so straight away I figured I'd divide into 3 to reduce that down to a healthier 644! I couldn't get hold of any Romano peppers in Asda so I had to opt for regular red peppers and it tasted fine. I also shoved a load of parmesan on the top, as I do love parmesan on my Pasta. Aga conversion: I roasted my peppers in the roasting oven (2nd set of runners) on a baking tray for the 30 minutes and then tr

Nigel Slater - Chicken Satay Sandwich

Chicken Satay Sandwich Recipe Book: Nigel Slater's Real Food  Buy the book here  Review: 5 stars for this one! Proper good! A real comfort food. It's not a healthy recipe, but by god it is good! If you like those chicken satay skewers with the peanut sauce that most good chinese takeaways do in the starter section of the menus, then you'll love this. I served mine on a baguette (you know those part baked ones that you can pick up in the supermarket, and I baked mine just before serving so they were nice and warm...Mmmmmm! I found it really easy and quick to make. Aga conversion: I mainly used the simmering plate for this recipe and then brought to the boil on the boiling plate. I baked the baguettes on the grid shelf on the bottom set of runner in the roasting oven for 8 minutes. Will I make this again? Yes definitely. # aga   # nigelslater   # nigelslater realfood   # chickensataysandwich

Nigel Slater - Toad with Browned Onion & Madeira Gravy

Toad with Browned Onions & Madeira Gravy Recipe Book: Nigel Slater's Real Food  Buy the book here  Review: 4 stars for this one! It was really good. Nice and tasty, easy enough to make and very filling. I served mine with homegrown garden peas and some mash (I have batched up portions of mash in my freezer from my homegrown potatoes to make it easy), but the mash was definitely not needed. I have included the gravy recipe too. This was just as good as the Hairy Dieters one. This takes slightly longer to make, so I made this before I started on the Toad recipe. I used my local Butchers Old English sausages (thin not thick - so I used 8 instead of 6) I also used Serrano ham as the supermarket didn't have any Proscuitto or thin sliced Pancetta.  For the gravy I used regular red wine, and I also used red onions as I had some in the fridge to use up. Forgot to take a photo of the entire finished Toad in the pan! I

Nigel Slater - Spiced Indian Chicken Baguette

Spiced Indian Chicken Baguette Recipe Book: Nigel Slater's Real Food  Buy the book here  Review: Full on 5 stars for this one! It was excellent. Super tasty, a real Saturday night easy to make  and quite filling sandwich for when you don't want a full meal or to order a takeaway... Reasonably quick and easy to make. I used Asda chicken wings so ended up using about 8 as there wasn't a whole load of meat on them.  Apologies for the not great photo, I had cut my baguette in half and started eating it when I realised I hadn't taken a photo! Aga conversion: I deviated slightly with this recipe and roasted my wings in the Roasting Oven on the bottom set of runners for around 30  minutes. Did the spice bit in a small frying pan. Toasted the baguette in the toasting rack on the boiling plate. Will I make this again? Yes definitely. # aga   # nigelslater   # nigelslater realfood   # Spicedindianchickenbaguette

Nigel Slater - Cauliflower Cheese & Mustard Soup

Cauliflower Cheese & Mustard Soup Recipe Book: Nigel Slater's Real Food  Buy the book here  Review: 1 star! What a disappointment! This recipe did not taste as good as it looked. It was bland and boring. Far too creamy. Neither of us liked it at all. I even attempted a rescue attempt by dissolving a Knorr Vegetable stock pot into it to no avail. Aga conversion: Mainly used the hotplates for this recipe. Will I make this again? Absolutely not. # aga   # nigelslater   # nigelslater realfood   # cauliflowercheeseandmustardsoup

Nigel Slater - Grilled Mustard & Herb Chicken

Grilled Mustard & Herb Chicken Recipe Book: Nigel Slater's Real Food  Buy the book here  Review: Full on 5 stars for this one! It was excellent. Super tasty, skin was crispy and the meat was moist, pure deliciousness. Quick to make and prep, although you do need to either marinade overnight in the fridge the night before or do it a couple of hours in advance. I did mine this morning after realising that it needed doing. I had already asked my butcher to remove the bones from the thighs so it made it a lot quicker. Basically chuck it all in a bowl, quick mix, cover and leave. I cooked mine 4 mins each side as per recipe but they needed another 2 mins a side longer as my thighs were fat. LOL. My husband was supposed to be having this for tea with me, so me being me, trying to be like super mega efficient (still in my outdoor gardening gear, I'll have you know), I went on iPhone Find Friends app as he had text me he was on the way home. So I looked and saw he w

Nigel Slater - Sausage and Potato Pie

Sausage and Potato Pie Recipe Book: Nigel Slater's Real Food  Buy the book here  Review: 4 stars for this one. It was very good, but it didn't blow me away.  I was impressed at how quick it was to prep (I use a mandolin to slice my potatoes and onion).  The pastry was very light and crumbly so unfortunately didn't stay in one piece when I transferred from pie dish to plate, hence my not so great photo. For the sausage meat, I used Old English sausages as my butcher said these were the most herby ones that he had. This recipe was originally supposed to be eaten with the silver surfers (in laws) who were coming over for tea but ended up as me and husband eating it at home and then taking the other two portions over to the hospital as my mother in law wasn't very well yesterday afternoon so their portions (with mushy peas) got tubbed up in takeaway tubs, wrapped in tin foil and then a nice big towel to keep hot and I took it over to the hospital - good
